About Us

Welcome to the Uptown Art House, located in the heart of the Main Street Historic District in beautiful downtown Marble Falls, TX. The venue was originally built in the 1940’s as a live music theater and throughout it’s long noble existence it has always kept true to it’s original creator’s design by providing a place for folks to congregate and enjoy live music performances.  Down through the years the theater has also been home to many classic movie screenings and special local events.  Business owners, Laurie and Jim Halfpenny, have carried on this time-honored tradition by providing a wide variety of entertainment to Marble Falls and its surrounding communities.  Along with staging live performances by top-notch songwriters and musical acts, the Uptown Art House screens classic movies, hosts stand-up comedians, variety shows, guest speakers and offers a one-of-a-kind space for private events such as film and video shoots, weddings, parties, seminars and corporate functions.  In addition to the  266-seat Main Stage auditorium (recently updated with a brand new Midas M32 digital mixer) the venue also features regular shows in The Loft, an intimate balcony listening room which seats 35 and has a house concert type atmosphere.  The main lobby Cinema Lounge always features a tasty selection of fine craft beer and local wine, soft drinks, sparkling waters, candy and even fresh made popcorn on movie days.

The Uptown Art House has been a dream business for Laurie and Jim who both come from strong music and film backgrounds.  A life-long songwriter, Jim was a professional film composer in Los Angeles before the couple moved to Texas in 2002. His film and TV music credits include over 25 feature film scores and a 13-episode series for the Discovery Channel.  Jim has also had a number of his songs placed in numerous film, TV and live theater productions.  Along with being a huge fan of music and film, Laurie is a consummate ‘numbers person’.  After a 15-year career with Bank of America she worked for 12 years as Chief Accountant for the Samuel Goldwyn Company, in charge of accounting for the company’s incoming and outgoing money streams that included films and acquisitions, and private and corporate trusts and foundations.  Together, they make a good production team that has proven itself in the past.  Laurie and Jim, along with festival partner Dave Niemeyer, are the founders and organizers of the popular Dripping Springs Songwriters Festival, which is held on the third weekend of October in Dripping Springs, Texas.  Each year this exciting event showcases over 45 talented songwriters from all across the US – some have come from as far away as Australia and Ireland.  Laurie and Jim bring this wealth of accumulated talent, along with some exciting new acts, to the Uptown Art House.

Recently listed by Austin Monthly as one of 8 LIVE MUSIC VENUES OUTSIDE OF AUSTIN WORTH THE DRIVE (see article), the Uptown Art House has been a solid alternative to braving the crowds and traffic of Austin in order to see quality live music. Each week, from Thursday through Friday, the Uptown Art House features live entertainment in The Loft listening room, and at least once a month a major ticketed event is held on the Main Stage.  Sundays are film days when we screen classic and art house movies and a monthly silent movie from the early days of Hollywood is shown, complete with a live piano score, just like the good old days.

Please note that, due to the marginal response to our programming, we have recently closed our business here at the Uptown Art House. We’ve been proud to be part of the artistic community of Marble Falls and we hope that our community will find a way to preserve and use this beautiful old theater.  It truly is an historic centerpiece to our small town.

Thanks to all our loyal customers, our fun corp of volunteers and to all the incredibly talented artists you performed on our stages.
